Can your IP address be traced through a VPN?

An IP address is a numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. An IP address serves two primary functions: host or network interface identification and location addressing.

The tracking of an IP address through a VPN can be difficult because a VPN can mask or change the apparent IP address. In addition, many VPN providers keep logs only for a limited time or do not keep logs at all. Nevertheless, it may still be possible to track an IP address through a VPN by using special tools or services designed for this purpose.

Based on what we can find online, it appears that DuckDuckGo cannot trace an IP address like some other search engines can. However, this may not be the whole story. If you are worried about your IP address being traced through DuckDuckGo, it might be best to use a different search engine or take steps to hide your IP address.

Worth knowing

It is possible for a private VPN to be traced. However, it is not 100% guaranteed as some may believe. Ways to trace a private VPN would include looking at the user’s internet provider and/or the country of origin for the IP address. Additionally, pinging the server can give an approximate location. Another method that could work is checking website traffic logs to see if there is any suspicious activity coming from suspected VPN IP addresses. Overall, it is possible to trace a private VPN but it requires extra effort and isn’t foolproof.

Worth knowing

Norton’s VPN cannot be traced as it provides private internet access. This means that your online activity cannot be tracked by 3rd party trackers, including ISPs or the websites you visit.

Worth knowing

If you use a VPN, your IP address will be hidden. This is because when you connect to a VPN server, your traffic is routed through that server. The server then forwards your traffic to its destination. Your IP address is only exposed to the VPN server, not to the internet at large.
