Let’s get started!
One of the reasons people use Virtual Private Networks is to keep their online activity private from their ISP. This can be helpful if you frequently use public WiFi networks or want to prevent your browsing history from being logged by your ISP. However, not all ISPs log user data equally. In some countries, like the US, ISPs are required by law to log user data and hand it over to the government upon request. In other countries, like Canada, ISPs aren’t legally required to log user data but many still do.
Additionally, even if your ISP doesn’t log user data, there are other ways for third-parties to track your online activity. For example, many websites include third-party cookies that track users across the internet for advertising purposes. And then there’s always the possibility of government surveillance – even in countries where it isn’t technically legal (looking at you again, US).
All of this is to say that using a VPN can help keep your online activity private but it isn’t perfect and there are no guarantees. So now that we’ve established that let’s talk about free Mac VPNs!

There are many different ways to set up a VPN, but if you’re looking for a free option on Mac, we recommend using the built-in VPN client called L2TP/IPSec. To set it up, open System Preferences > Network and click the “+” button in the bottom-left corner. Select “VPN” as the interface type and choose “L2TP over IPsec” from the Protocol drop-down menu.
Enter a name for the VPN connection, then enter the server address provided by your VPN provider. Finally, enter your username and password (if required) and click “Connect”. Once connected, you will see a padlock icon next to your network name indicating that the connection is secure and encrypted.)

When you enable Opera’s VPN, your traffic is routed through a secure server. This encrypts your data and hiding your identity and location from anyone who might be spying on your connection. Your IP address is replaced with the IP address of the server, so websites will only see the server’s IP instead of yours.
Opera’s VPN is free to use, and there are no limits on data usage. You can choose from a list of servers around the world, or let Opera choose the best one for you automatically.
To get started, open Opera and go to Settings (Preferences on macOS). Under Privacy & security, enable the “FreeVPN” option. Then click Choose location and select a country from the list. That’s it! Your traffic will now be routed through a secure server in that country.
